Editorial
If your neighbor subscribes to different magazines than the ones you purchase, he is exercising his right, as an American citizen, to express his personal opinion. If he evidences irritation at the publications you prefer, he is beginning to try to exert control over your freedom of choice.
However, if he attempts to take the publications away from you and/or prevent you from buying any more, he is robbing you of your right, guaranteed by the Constitution, to freedom of choice. But many people in this country permit this type of robbery (under the guise of “mere” censorship) to take place constantly, usually without even a protest.
“I’m not going to kick up a fuss about something so unimportant. I’ll save my fight for the big freedoms that warrant my concern,” they rationalize. But countries and their citizens seldom lose their freedom in one grand coup. Germany, for example, gave up freedom piece by piece—and all in the name of morality.
The leader who eventually propelled that nation into near feudal persecution and military control started out to raise the “moral” level of the citizenry through strict censorship. If we wish to retain our freedom, we cannot permit any group of people—no matter how self-righteously they justify their actions—to limit the free choice of others.
If we have learned anything from the lessons of history, it should be that every freedom, no matter how small, is vital to the continued existence of liberty in a country. The man who tries to tell you what you can see and read is attempting to deprive you of your right to make your own choices.
If you let him have his way, you are selling yourself—and your country—into moral slavery. You are passively allowing him to substitute his opinions and his preferences for yours. In that direction lies servitude on many levels.
If you value the guarantees contained in the United States Constitution, defend your right to make your own evaluations and choices—or you may lose that right forever.
