Editorial Excerpt

A Hollywood commercial photographer named Tom Kelley recently shared with the Los Angeles Times his bittersweet recollections of the most famous photo session he ever made. In 1949, Kelley posed an unknown film starlet named Norma Jean Monroe, recumbent on a bear-skin, with “nothing on but the radio,” as she later quipped.

A publisher of calendars paid Kelley $400 for the shot, which has been reprinted some 30 million times. When the pose went into distribution on a 1952 calendar, the U.S. Post Office refused to accept it as mail. Furthermore, when Monroe became famous, she “borrowed” the rest of his color transparencies and didn’t return them. When Kelley recovered them years later, they were too faded to reproduce.

Kelley remarked, “One of the greatest bodies I’ve ever seen. Today, those pictures would be worth a fortune.” The notion that a beautiful girl in the nude could be regarded as a work of art is now universally accepted. Centuries passed before Michelangelo’s David could be represented without a fig leaf adorning his front! Change, in this case, is for the better.

Perhaps if censors waited twenty years before banning something as obscene, they would find that our taste has advanced by twenty years, too.
